Future support for "On-demand" feature

Reported by: Whosthatrandom Owned by: sam
Priority: major Milestone: 2.0.0
Component: Radio Version: 1.4.0
Keywords: on-demand Cc:
Platform: All Firmware: All

Description

Last.fm recently announced that all of their tracks can be played in full. At the moment, each track can only be heard three times, but in future a subscription service will be introduced where those paying for the feature will have unlimited on-demand access to all of the music on the site. Perhaps this could be implemented into the 2.0 version of MobileScrobbler??

As you mentioned, the on-demand service is still in a testing phase, and at the moment it is only accessible through the flash player on the Last.fm website. However, the Last.fm staff announced that they'll soon include the new service into their desktop client. As MobileScrobbler relies on the (mostly undocumented) programming interface used by this client we'll have to wait until then to know for sure if we can include the new service. As you may know, MobileScrobbler already does include additional features for subscribers, so provided that Last.fm doesn't implement any special restrictions (which I wouldn't rule out) we'll probably support the on-demand service in the future.

The master said:

We pay the artists every time you play a track on Last.fm, based on a share of advertising revenue. We think ads in desktop software suck, so we aren’t currently playing full-length tracks on the desktop. That said, we are committed to doing wonderful things for music on the desktop this year, and will unveil our plans in the coming months.

Let's hope that those wonderful things include an openly accessible API.
